History of Bengal Tools Limited

Bengal Tools Limited started its operation in 1966 by establishing design and manufacturing facilities for various kinds of press tools, jigs & fixtures and form tools. In the initial stages our clients were Hindustan Motors Limited, Remington Rand, Philips, Guesttetner, Oriental General Industries and TELCO. This business tapered down over the years as many of the companies started their own tool making.

Around 1970 BTL looked for diversification and started their search for large-scale alternate business available in the country. Then BTL located that Defense Organizations were purchasing a large amount of various equipment for their needs. BTL’s break-through came from an order for Mobile Corrosive Acid Handling Plant. It was quickly followed up Concertina for Border Fencing, Portable Chain Saw and Portable Wood Borear.

By this time BTL’s Press Tool business started coming down and it would not have been prudent to rely only on Defence. So in 1974 BTL struck a technical collaboration with Tempered Tools of Sheffield for manufacture of shear blades. This product of BTL is still being received well by customers like all major steel plants, paper mills and a host of general engineering industries.

When the above production stabilized and management strengthened, BTL realized that it had room for some new products. At that time Larsen & Tubro approached BTL to develop Air Pre-Heater Basket for Renusagar Power Plant. This product was successfully designed and developed & since 1976 BTL has been suppling Air Pre-heater Baskets to all major Indian power plants and captive Plants belonging to Steel Plants.

In 1980, BTL diversified into design and supply of Material Handling Plant and the first Order was received from Heavy Engineering Corporation, Ranchi for Plate Mill of Bhilai Steel Plant.

In 1984 BTL ventured into turnkey installation of Coal Handling Plants and the first order was received from Eastern Coal Fields for its Tilaboni Mines. Next two jobs were from Bhaskar Shrachi and Eastern Coal Fields

Simultaneously BTL also developed a design for gear boxes and is now an established manufacturer of Gear Boxes of up to 110 KW.

BTL continued its business with Defense and gradually got the following orders:

a) Mat Ground surfacing of various capacity and applications.
b)   Pre-Fabricated shelter (light, medium and plain).
c)   Mechanical Mine Layer Equipment.
d)   Water Purification Plant Portable.
e)   Spares and components for Kruppman Bridge.

With stabilized management practices, quality control systems and systemization of procedures BTL is now looking forward to export marketing. BTL is also in the lookout for technical collaboration in the field of Air Pre-Heater Basket, Material Handling Plant, Heat Exchangers, Gear Boxes or any other engineering products, which can be manufactured in large quantities and sold in the Core Industries.
